Food Review: Tokyo Soba
(Located at Icon Village in Tanjong Pagar Area)
Small shop with 2 x 4 seater, 3 x 2 seater as well as a row of bar seats in front of the kitchen and some outside seats. Staff are friendly like most Japanese shops. Most of the staff are Japanese and we are duely served with green tea once we are shown to our seats. All of the seats indoor are high stools but there are leg rests and the bar seats comes with a hook below to hang your bag.
Cripsy Chicken Skin (Jap: Pari Pari Age)
Cripsy, flavourful. Comes with mayo, if required. The skins are fried to perfection and lightly seasoned to bring out the flavour of the skins. The skins are not oily, as what a well-fried skin should be. The skins are good on its down even without the mayonaise.
Tonkatsu Cold Soba
Price: $16 (inclusive of raw egg @ $1)
Sauce with bonito flavour, soba firm but lack of taste. Can come with raw egg
Tonkatsu is cripsy and nice and batter is pretty light which is good. Meat could be more tender but its definitely on the better side. Sauce can be a little more sour to bring out the flavour of the tonkatsu and reduce the "gelatness" of fried stuff though in this case, the tonkatsu is not oily at all.
Raw Octopus with Wasabi (Jap: Tako Wasabi)
The octopus is fresh but i personally think that the alcohol taste is over empowering the whole dish. The taste of wasabi is not really felt in the dish. According to the owner, this dish is suppiled by another operator so they cannot control the taste but they will feedback to the supplier.
Kaisen Kakiage Soba (Mixed Seafood)
Pretty well cooked. Cripsy and yet light. Not overly oily and generous in ingredients, both onions, veg and seafood which consist of prawns, scallops.
The soba soup is made of bonito base, decorated with seaweed, is light to the taste. However, the overall lack of buckwheat taste of the noodles (just like the cold soba) pulled down the taste overall else it would be a pretty good bowl of soba. Some tempura bits, if given will add points to the dish.
Fried Bonito (Jap: Katsuo Fry, Seasonal)
One of the better sides. Light breadcrumb batter with minimum fishy taste on the bonito meat which is something to compliment.
