Food Review: Swee Guan Hokkien Mee
(located along Geylang Lorong 29, together with Kwong Satay)
Fried Hokkien Mee
Price: $6 for small, $8 for medium
To be honest to review hokkien mee, it's always a controversial topic and everyone of us would probably have one stall special to our hearts as our palette can be very different. So when I head down to Swee Guan, I try my best to keep objective and give my review in the most neutral way.
First off, Swee Guan's hokkien mee is a very traditional plate of hokkien mee with a little sauce and focus on the unami flavour of the sauce and noodles. So if you are looking at drier version of hokkien mee or the soupier ones, this is not the kind for you. The plate consists of the usual ingredients like prawns, sotong, eggs, chives and pork lard. The flavour of the hokkien mee is pretty nice and is for sure, a good basic plate of hokkien mee with wok hei.
I personally feel that the difference between the different hokkien mee lies in the direction of flavour eg more sweet & prawny feel, wok hei feel with drier texture etc and what comes with this plate of mee is the unique charcoal taste. This can be a hit or miss depending on how you like your hokkien mee to be so if you think you like your hokkien mee to have charcoal taste, you should definitely come and have a try. The ingredients are generally ok except some prawns that are in our plates are not the freshest but acceptable.
You can add condiments to your hokkien mee with a choice of cut chiili or sambal alike chilli. It's called alike because it's not really sambal chilli and it's a little sweet to the taste. Not my kind of chilli but to be honest, it goes pretty ok with the noodles.
In summary, any hokkien mee lovers should come and try this sometime and derive your own verdict. It's not the kind I like but I reckon there will be (and there are) fans whom are in love with the taste.
