Food Review: Song Han Carrot Cake
(located in Tampines Round Market)
Black / White Fried Carrot Cake
Price: $3/$4/5 (pictured $4)
This carrot cake stall has been famous for their unique tasting carrot cake for quite a long time. I have been wanting to give this a try but their opening hours are usually till 3pm in the afternoon so it's difficult for working people to visit except during weekends.
Finally this time, I found a chance to visit this stall. Firstly, the $4 version which is the one in picture above is really generous with eggs and prawns. Frankly I'm never a fan of having prawns in my fried carrot cake so the prawns are never going to be part of my verdict criteria. Having said, the carrot cake is definitely well fried at least from the looks of it.
First taste, trying out the white version first as this is the much famed version. The first impression: Yup! There is a distinct curry flavour to it. Not to the extent of curry flavour carrot cake but just a slight hint. The carrot cake don't seems to be factory made as there is a good texture to it and the rice smell is pretty strong in this. Factory made ones are usually too spongy. The eggs are well cooked but not over and have a wok fried taste to the whole dish. Not bad indeed.
The black version is just nice and not too sweet, coupled with a few mouthfuls of charred and crisp ends but that's the good basis to a good plate of fried carrot cake in my opinion.
What could be missing in the carrot cake in this stall is probably the "cai po" or pickled (stems?) veg that I think fried carrot cake should have. Again this is my personal preference but other than that, it's still a good plate of fried carrot cake.
Recommend to give this a shot especially for the white version with that curry hinted flavour!

Around Tampines Round Market, there are a lot of car parks but it's pretty full in the morning. During weekdays are better as the lots turnover is quite fast else weekend, try to avoid and park at the multi-storey carpark.
