Food Review: Hock Lam Beef Noodles (Ceasing business from 11 July 2019)

(located in ARC, Alexandra Road)

Hock Lam is one of the oldest beef noodles stall in Singapore since 1911. The history goes a long way and it had been a favourite with many locals.

Small eatery with limited seats for the crowd. At busy hours, you will need to queue for food as well as wrestle for seats.

Beef noodles (Dry) Mixed Bowl
Price: $9.90 (add $3 for a set)

Slightly more salty than general beef noodles but taste good. Would rate this as probably a little lesser than Zheng Yi dry version.

The dry noodles comes with thick bee hoon by default but you can request for flat rice noodles or yellow noodles as well but the traditional ones comes with thick bee hoon. The meats (tendons, innards and sliced beef) are well cooked to absolute tenderness. There is absolute zero effort to chew. I would like my meats to be a little more chewy but i'm not complaining on this. The sauce in the noodles are spiced with chinese herbs but not to the extent of pungent. You can choose to add in the condiments over the counter like salted vegetable, lime, chilli and coriander etc. I went with mine on salted vegetable and coriander for the traditional touch.

The soup was definitely better than Zhengyi in terms of flavour and we did order another extra bowl of soup version to try ($7.90). However i still prefer the soup in Toa Payoh Beef Noodles that gives the absolute beefy punch.

Chilli wise i feel is on par with Zhengyi which gives a nice heat and sourness. A must have to go along with the meats.

The sides that came with the set however, was just average and expensive to be honest. We had century egg which is hard and chewy and spring roll which is cripsy and hot at least but nothing to shout about.

All in all, Hock Lam goes into my top 3 list for Beef Noodles in Singapore for sure and it's a pity to see that it's closing down in July this year.

Make your way to savour the taste for the last time before it closes but remember to cater time for queues as it can get pretty busy during meal times.
